Pastoral Letters written by the Archbishop of Goa and Daman
PASTORAL LETTER ON THE OCCASION OF YESU KRIST JAYANTI 2000
God became man and dwelt amongst us: Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Saviour. He “died for our sins… and was raised to life.” (cf. 1 Cor. 15:3,4). This Good News is being proclaimed to the World for the last twenty centuries.
The Great Jubilee Year 2000 “is meant to be a great prayer of praise and thanksgiving, especially for the gift of the Incarnation of the Son of God and of the Redemption which He accomplished.” (Tertio Millennia Adveniente, Apostolic Letter on Preparation for the Jubilee Year, no: 32)
After a meaningful preparation of three years, we are now celebrating the YESU KRIST JAYANTI, a joyful event inviting all of us to respond to Our Saviour by opening our doors to HIM. Keeping in mind our own situation in Goa, we are all called to be authentic and committed disciples of Jesus by experiencing and proclaiming Him in our daily life.
ON THE OCCASION OF THE INAUGURATION OF THE
INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE FAMILY, 1994
Since “the future of humanity passes by way of the family” (Familiaris Consortio 86) the Church, looking with favour on all initiatives aimed at the good of the person and the family, has decided to observe her own Year of the Family, in collaboration with all people of goodwill who work for the genuine welfare of human families. As her own contribution, she brings the values, embodied in the person of Christ, who reflects the light and glory of our Father in Heaven, from whom every family in Heaven and on earth takes its name. (Heb. 1:3, Eph. 3: 14-15)
Reflecting the glory and love of its Creator, the family is indeed called to be a community of life with a mission of guarding, revealing and communicating love (FC 17). How is this mission being lived out by our families in Goa?
PASTORAL LETTER TO THE LAITY, RELIGIOUS AND CLERGY
OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF GOA AND DAMAN
Christians are not called to work merely for their own welfare and individual salvation. They should be always aware that they are sent out by Christ into the world with a mission to bring out the values of the Kingdom planted by God an hidden in the hearts of men. It is high time for all Christians to shed once for all the religious individualism in which many persist in being ensconced, closing their eyes or being indifferent to the course of contemporary events and wallowing in the luxury of a merely individualistic morality (cf. GS 30).

“GIVE THE WORLD JESUS”
Jesus came to proclaim to the whole world the Father’s Year of Favour, an Era of justice and love! (Lk. 4:18-19). What He proclaimed He accomplished through the Paschal Mystery of His Death and Resurrection. This unique event was celebrated with special favour during the Holy Jubilee Year, the 1950th anniversary of mankind’s redemption, which we closed gratefully on Easter Sunday last. We cannot tell what were its fruits; that is God’s secret. But we cannot doubt that it was for us Christians and through us to other men a truly fruitful “Year of Favour”.
You shall be perfect and without blemish with the Lord your God.
