To the Priests, Religious, Lay Faithful and People of Good Will in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Filled with the joy of being gifted with Faith in Jesus, I extend my loving greetings to you, my fellow Christians and to all people of good will.

As you are aware, our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has declared the period from October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013 as a Year of Faith. Faith is God’s Gift. This gift needs to be appreciated, cherished and nourished. But more than anything, it has to be lived. The foundation of our faith is the encounter with the Christ-event or rather with the Person of Jesus Christ, who gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction (cf. Deus caritas est 1).

Dear Sisters and Brothers!

The grace and the peace of God our Father and of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

1. INTRODUCTION

A new age dawned on these our territories of Goa, Daman and Diu on December 19, 1961. These, and before them, the enclaves of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, were freed from 450 years of foreign domination. The new era that followed allowed us to take great strides in our own development: a university in the educational field, industrial projects in the industrial area, self-governance and an ever progressing lifestyle. At a moment like this, I recall a famous poem of Rabindranath Tagore: “Let my country awake.” The original text is given at the end of this Letter.
