New beginnings: Diocesan Centre for Missionary Animation

- “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in

him might not perish but might have eternal life” (Jn 3:16). Thus, the only Son of God became man and was called Jesus, meaning Savior (Mt 1:21).  He came to the world as a Messenger of the Love of God the Father to humankind. He expressed that Love in his teachings, in his life full of compassion, especially for the poor and downtrodden, and in his many cures aimed at restoring people to the wholeness of life. That Love found full expression in His Passion, Death on the Cross, and Resurrection.  This is our belief – our FAITH.

- The risen Lord appeared to the Apostles many times but lastly, on a mountain in Galilee, he gave his great commission to preach the Gospel, the Good News of the Love of God, to the world (Mt 28:16b). Jesus is seen in the act of commissioning near the geographical location of Galilee.

- St. Francis Xavier who received the faith and the missionary mandate through the successors of the Apostles is seen coming from Spain and Portugal in Europe to India. He preached that message of the Love of God by word of mouth and witness of his life dedicated totally to the service of the poor wherever he went. He made Goa the centre of irradiation of that faith to the rest of India and other countries of Asia.

- The seed of faith planted in Goa by St. Francis Xavier grew into a big tree – the well established Church in Goa, which in turn produced many missionaries – Messengers of Love. Bl. Joseph Vaz stands out among them having spread the message of love of God in North Kanara and Sri Lanka, daringly facing all sorts of difficulties like St. Paul. Bl. Joseph Vaz crossed over to Jaffna in Sri Lanka from Tuticorin in South East India. Hence, he is seen near Tuticorin and Jaffna.

- Goa had become the Centre of irradiation of faith to the whole of East in the second millennium and the Goa Mission Congress made us aware that God still wants Goa to continue to be the Centre of missionary activity in this millennium. This is symbolized by the words “GOA PROCLAIM” in the form of a Cross, seen near the geographical place of Goa on the globe.

- The Globe is the place where the Missionary Mandate is to be implemented.

- As the English title reveals, the Diocesan Centre is for Missionary Animation and therefore has to “see” that the message of the love of God reaches out to all the strata of human activity. Providentially, the Logo took the shape of an “eye” to remind the Centre that it has to reach out to all the strata of human activity.

- The English title “Diocesan Centre for Missionary Animation” makes the outer part of the upper eyelid of this eye and the Missionary Animation is expressed by the theme of the Goa Mission Congress “Fired with the Love of Jesus, let us spread the Love of God” which makes the outer part of the lower eyelid. The name of the Centre translated in Konkani as “Devacho Mog Porgottpachem Dhormpranthik Kendr” (not literal but quite significative translation in the light of the reflections of the Goa Mission Congress) forms the inner part of the upper eyelid, while the Konkani theme of the Goa Mission Congress “Jezuchea Mogachea Ujean Devacho Mog Ximpddaum-ia” becomes the inner part of the lower eyelid. This too is in place because this Centre is to a great extent inspired by the Goa Mission Congress.

- Finally, we are indebted to Dr. Fara Aninha Fernandes, MDS from Porvorim for weaving artistically the ideas presented to her by the Director of the DCMA and shaping the above LOGO for the Diocesan Centre for Missionary Animation.
