and Heads of Educational & Other Institutions,

Archdiocese of Goa & Daman.

Dear Rev. Father, Sisters, Brother, Madam, Sir,

Greetings to each and every one of you, your Community and your Collaborators.

HOLY CHILDHOOD DAY this year is celebrated on Sunday, 15th February 2015

Theme: LIVE YOUR FAITH SHARING IT WITH OTHERS

Holy Childhood Association is one of the four sections of the Pontifical Mission Societies.  The primary aim of the Association is to inculcate a vibrant Missionary Spirit in children, especially where children share their faith with children suffering in many ways.

Jesus desires the Integral Growth Every Child:

Jesus expresses his special love for children: Let the children come to me and do not hinder them…’ (Matt: 19/13-15).

Jesus showcases the sharing nature of little children in the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves to satisfy the hunger of thousands. Andrew, the apostle ushered the child to Jesus. (Jn. 6/1-15).

Jesus warns those who cause scandal and would lead children into sin: ‘it would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin (cfr: Lk.17/1-2).

Reflections towards Integral Growth of Every child:

The Right to Positive Growth of every child is inherent in the love, security and holistic care, selflessly provided by parents and elders in her/his home or by those In-charges in Foster Homes/Other Institutions.

Integral Growth through Positive Formation is a very major responsibilityas this is a very delicate, innocent, most precious stage of a child’s life.

Children who are blessed with what they need must be inspired with the ‘Spirit of Solidarity and Respect’ towards those denied due to no fault of theirs.

REAL FAITH TRANSFORMS

Let us ensure that the essential dimension of our faith is shared with our children to motivate them towards their Integral Development:

Educational Institutions can:

Give sufficient publicity, well in advance, to the theme of the Holy Childhood Day Celebration – “Live your faith sharing it with others”.

Explain to the children the situation of the children worldwide and of the children in socio-economically poor countries.

Conduct competitions for Singing on “hymns on mission”; Elocution on “I am called to be a saint” and Quiz competition on Religious Congregation(s) in my parish, their founder, charism, history etc.

Form Volunteer groups and conduct an area-wise survey to identify children denied their rights: because of ignorance/negligence/poverty/broken homes; children under the age of 14 not attending School to work at home or work to earn for the family; sexually abused children; homeless children found on beaches, in markets and other places, fending for themselves and misused for nefarious activities.

Form Teams of Volunteers, including senior students, to conduct After School Classes especially for students who do have guidance at home.

Organise a “Sharing till it hurts” Project in which children contribute in cash or kind a part of the gifts they receive personally (not by asking parents).

Parishes can:

Entrust the Social Action Team of the PPC to formulate SHORT/LONG TERM PLANS to meet the needs of the vulnerable and marginalised children identified.

Hold meetings with relevant Authorities, NGO’s, Child Welfare Department of the Government of Goa, Childline, Children’s Rights, etc., as required.

Other Institutions can:

Organise Awareness and Training Sessions for semi-literate, illiterate, marginalised  women, on human values, health, hygiene and sanitation, nutrition, elimination of misconceptions or myths on `child-care’, superstitious practices, etc. which will enable the integral development of children.

Your contribution towards the Holy Childhood Association enables to help Homes for Children, needy students in the Educational Institutions and to motivate Missionary Activities among children.

Kindly send a report of the activities conducted to celebrate the Holy Childhood Day along with the contributions you have encouraged adults and children to make towards the Holy Childhood Fund to Caritas-Goa, Institute Piedade, D. B. Marg, Panjim, Goa

As I wish you a very a Happy Holy Childhood Day, let us through our firm convictions and commitment allow children come to us and experience Jesus in the reality of their lives.

Yours Fraternally,

Fr. Maverick Fernandes

Diocesan Director for Holy Childhood
