THEOLOGICAL AND PASTORAL FORMATION OF THE LAITY
IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF GOA AND DAMAN
The Lay faithful, as we know, have an unique and indispensable role to play in seeking the Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God. The documents of the Church speak of empowering the Lay faithful for this special mission. The recently concluded 31st Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) in its Final Statement has the following to say about formation of the Lay faithful: “We realize that formation of the lay faithful is the need of the hour. To this end, we commit ourselves, as a priority, to initiate programmes for lay formation to equip them to play their role in the Church and society”.Keeping this urgent need in mind (cf. Goa Diocesan Synod Documents 52-56),the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman will offer a two year Theological and Pastoral Formation Course at the Pastoral Institute, Old Goa, beginning from June 2014.We would kindly request the Parish Priests, Chaplains, Assistants and the Lay faithful to spread the message, at various levels, and to motivate people to join the Course.

We, the 187 member-bishops of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), came together at the Alphonsian Pastoral Institute, Palai in Kerala, the place sanctified by St. Alphonsa, from February 5 -12, 2014, for the 31st Plenary Assembly. In continuation of the 30th Plenary Assembly’s theme, Role of the Church for a Better India, the Bishops deliberated, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, on the theme: “Renewed Church for a Renewed Society - Responding to the Call of Vatican II”. On the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the CBCI Plenary Assembly reflected on this theme in the light of the Second Vatican Council documents in order to draw inspiration for her future course of life and ministry. We took into account the reflections of the Catholic Council of India which studied the same theme at its December 2013 annual meeting in Varanasi.
My dear Sisters and Brothers,
Our country is once again preparing for the General Elections. This is an important moment for us since the direction that our country takes, its progress and much of our everyday lives depend largely on the leaders we elect to our Parliament. As Pastors of our people, we consider it our duty to address you through this Pastoral Letter, so that, joining hands with all people of good will, we can effectively contribute to shaping the future of our nation.
On 26th January 2014 as the Nation celebrated its 64th Republic Day with the feelings of patriotic joy and nationalism, the Rachol Seminary made a memorable visit to the Central Jail, Aguada.

An unique day for Celebrating our Faith
Fr. Romeu Godinho, DCC, Old Goa
Introduction: Come 2nd February, and the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman will celebrate its Catechetical Day in all its parishes and schools. Catechetical Day is a day for evaluating the work undertaken during the Catechetical year. This Pastoral year, as Catechists, we have been so imbued in our work that we have grown in our faith and so it is fitting that we express our thanksgiving to God during the Catechetical Week Celebrations. The Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate ourselves, as a community, to the mission of living, celebrating and witnessing our faith.
The theme for the next pastoral year 2014-2015, which is also the year during which we are having the Exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier is
"Bhavarth Ekchar Rochta, Kuttumb Thirayta, Somaz Novsorunk Pattoyta"
and the English translation of it,
"Faith Creates Communion, Strengthens Family, Commissions to Renew Society".
Fr Alfred Vaz
Convenor for the Committee for Exposition
